Iona’s Beach is known as the singing beach. When the waves of Lake Superior roll away from the shore, the smooth pink rocks tinkle against one another and making a sweet sound. This narrow strip of beach stretches over 300 yards and is set against a backdrop of alder, paper birch, balsam poplar, currant, and dogwood trees. There are very few beaches of this size on the North Shore.
What makes these rocks the shape, size, and color they are? To the north there is a cliff of pink rhyolite and felsite bedrock. Storms and winds beat on the pink rock making it smooth and form them into the flattened pebbles or shingles. From there the rocks travel down the shore to the south and land against a basalt formation, coving the beach.
Iona’s Beach is special for many reasons. It gets its name from Iona Lind, a former resort owner. The parking lot for the beach currently resides where Ms. Lind’s resort once stood. Take the family for a day of relaxation, dipping your feet in the water, and skipping a few stones. This beach won’t disappoint!
